About us

Meteorological observation from the MTSAT Weather is of interest to people, since it affects agriculture, industry, transportation and our activities.
It sometimes threatens our lives particularly in Japan where its weather is a full of variety with distinct four seasons during the course of a year.

The Meteorological Satellite Center (MSC) of Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) has been operating a series of Geostationary Meteorological Satellites (GMSs) since 1978, which is nicknamed "HIMAWARI".

Himawari-8 carries an imaging sensor and captures earth images from space over the Western Pacific region day and night continually.

The images from Himawari-8 are used for weather analysis, forecast and severe weather monitoring, and contribute to prevention and mitigation of natural disasters, such as typhoon, heavy rain and heavy snow.
